The gluteals muscles (aka the “glutes”, or the bum muscles) consist of 3 main muscles – gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. Glute tension is common in people doing lots of activity such as running or gym work involving lots of squatting. But far from being a condition that only affects athletes, glute tension can affect anybody because we use them so much in everyday life.
Muscle imbalances, poor posture and incorrect movement patterns such as poor lifting technique can contribute to glute tension. Proper assessment of these movements and imbalances by a health professional is highly recommended to avoid prolonged issues or flow-on effects to other areas in the body.
Using the spiky ball as shown in the video above can help to give relief of gluteal tightness, and may help to keep painful symptoms at bay until a longer term solution can be found if necessary.
